Nigerian conglomerate Dangote Group has started construction of a 500,000 t/yr NPK blending facility as part of its fertilizer complex in the Lekki free trade zone in southwest Nigeria’s Lagos state.

The plant will be completed by October 2021. It will supply urea raw material from its own nearby production site with phosphates and potash imported for blending. Urea production will take place at Dangote’s new 1.3mn t/yr urea plant that is now scheduled to start commercial production in November, according to latest Dangote estimates.

Nigeria has a large blending installed capacity, notionally estimated at around 4mn t/yr although actual production is at best 50pc of this level. NPK imports were effectively banned by the federal government in November 2018 in an effort to support the domestic sector and save foreign currency reserves.

The Nigerian fertilizer sector is one of the largest in Africa, estimated at around 1.75mn t/yr, mainly comprising consumption of urea domestically produced and NPKs. DAP and MOP are imported as a raw material for NPK blending under the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative.
